And the winner is…

We haven’t been doing much on this here blog, due mostly to the pre-World Fantasy Con frenzy of getting everything ready for it, plus a heavy editing workload and the fact that Spectral Towers is being relocated. However, this is one piece of news that just won’t sit still and cooperate until we tell it to the world. So, drum roll please…

The Nine Deaths of Dr. Valentine cover image

John Llewellyn Probert’s The Nine Deaths of Dr. Valentine, published by Spectral, won a British Fantasy Award for Best Novella. Absolutely stonking achievement, and we’re so proud that John’s wonderful paean to Vincent Price and his films has been recognised for the great book it is. Congratulations!!

Look out for a special offer on the book later this week (once we’ve recovered, that is…)!

And, of course, we hope that this is the first of many awards coming Spectral’s way. You can probably all see our grins right now…

WFC Book Launch: news

Spectral Press logoSometimes, things don’t work out as we would wish, despite our best efforts and diligence. We were hoping to launch the hardbacks of Tim Lebbon’s Still Life and Paul Kane’s Ghosts collection at this year’s World Fantasy Convention but, due to reasons beyond our control at the the printers, they won’t be delivered to the event on time. Now, we could have gone to another printers who would have been able to do the job for us BUT, there’s one thing that stopped us: OUR COMMITMENT TO QUALITY. Customers expect (and deserve) a certain level of quality from our books and we would not dare to step even a little bit below that mark. We would rather delay the launch of a product and get the best than rush something through that might potentially be less than what our customers expect. We are not willing to compromise on this one. So, the hardbacks will be delivered here to Spectral Towers AFTER the event, but they WILL be to our usual high standards (we know the company and trust them).

Now, what does this mean in terms of the launch event? Simple: instead of the hardback being launched, we will be launching the paperback editions of the titles instead. Furthermore, both Tim and Paul will be there to sign them, along with Nancy Kiilpatrick (who wrote the introduction to Paul’s volume), and cover artists Edward Miller (aka Les Edwards) and Jim Burns. Jim will also hopefully be bringing along some posters of the cover art and Les will have his artwork on display. The paperbacks will be available at the special convention price of £10 each (usual price £12.50).  (For those of you who want the hardbacks but haven’t yet ordered one, there will be order forms available – alternatively you can be pre-order the tomes directly from us elsewhere on this blog.) Furthermore, we also hope to have several other Spectral authors present, including Mark Morris, who will hopefully be reading from his Spectral novella, to be published in 2015.

We sincerely apologise to all those who have already purchased hardbacks and were coming along to collect their copies at WFC. Rest assured, though, they will be sent to you after the event and we will pay postage.

Many thanks for your patience!

Still Life & Ghosts: final covers

Here they are – the final front cover images for the two new books from Spectral, due to be launched at this year’s World Fantasy Convention on Saturday, November 2nd, 2013, between 2pm and 3pm at the Brighton Hilton Metropole, Brighton, UK.  Not only will Tim Lebbon and Paul Kane be there to sign the books, but also artists Edward Miller (Les Edwards) and Jim Burns as well, plus Nancy Kilpatrick (Power of the Blood World series) too, who wrote the introduction to Ghosts.

You can preorder both titles now – whether you’re attending WFC or not. There are two price points: one WITH postage included (for those not attending) and the other WITHOUT. If you ARE coming to the Convention, you can just pick them up and get them signed.

Jenni’s husband was part of the Road of Souls––his flesh swarmed by ants and pecked by rooks, bones crushed to powder by wheels of dread––and yet she still saw him in the pool.

The incursion has been and gone, the war is over, and the enemy is in the land, remote and ambiguous.  The village outskirts are guarded by vicious beasts, making escape impossible.  The village itself is controlled by the Finks, human servants to the enemy––brutal, callous, almost untouchable.

Everything is less than it was before… time seems to move slower, the population is much denuded, and life itself seems to hold little purpose.  This is not living, it’s existing.

But in a subjugated population, there is always resistance.

For Jenni, the happiest part of this new life is visiting the pool in the woods, seeing her dead husband within, and sharing memories of happier times.  It calms her and makes her feel alive.

But the resistance comes to her for help.

And when her dead husband tells her it is time to fight, Jenni’s life is destined for a shattering change.

“Tim Lebbon conjures up the horror of a world distorted by fear, distrust, and something unspeakable. With respectful nods to H.P Lovecraft Still Life rubs reality up against nightmares in this compact, engrossing treat.” Muriel Gray

They are all around us all the time. But only a few make contact, and only certain people are destined to see the Ghosts. Here, you’ll read a lonely shade’s tale… a deceased old man’s house being invaded… how one person discovers the true meaning of the Christmas spirit, while a parent struggles to come to terms with the sad loss of a child… and what happens when the ghosts of war go on the rampage, or when a monstrous wraith stalks the streets looking for revenge. Gathering together all of award-winning and bestselling author Paul Kane’s supernatural fiction, including three brand new stories–one a sequel to Charles Dickens’ ‘The Signal-Man’–and featuring an introduction from bestselling horror author Nancy Kilpatrick (Power of the Blood World series), the script of Wind Chimes introduced by its director Brad Watson (7th Dimension), plus suitably atmospheric cover art from Edward Miller, this is one collection that will haunt you forever.

The painting’s by the legendary science fiction artist Jim Burns, whose work has graced many of the finest writers’ books for many decades and which can be found in bookshops all over the world. The actual launch of Still Life (alongside the other book being debuted at WFC, Paul Kane‘s Ghosts collection) will not only include the authors themselves signing copies, but also Jim and Edward Miller (cover artist for Ghosts) as well as Nancy Kilpatrick, who wrote the introduction to Paul’s short story volume. Now, that’s a package no one could possibly refuse!

Both books are now available on preorder – for those who can’t make it to the Brighton event. You can either order them separately OR take advantage of the SPECIAL COMBINED OFFER where you pay £15 each rather than £17.50, plus £5 postage, thus making a little saving. The Collected Spectral Chapbooks: postponed

Spectral Press logoAs the title of this blog suggests, the projected collected volume of the first two year’s worth of chapbooks has been postponed – this is for reasons entirely beyond our control. We are now looking to publish it either next year or in 2015. This means, of course, that this year’s chapbooks (and next year’s if we decide to do it in 2015) will also be included, again all of which will be illustrated by the inestimable Nick Gucker (whose website can be found here) as added bonuses (plus any other material we think of in the meantime). All concerned parties have been contacted and offered, where appropriate, refunds or alternatives. However, we can promise that when the volume does eventually see the light of day, it’ll be a blinder!

EDIT: PLEASE NOTE THAT DELUXE BOX-SET OF THE CHAPBOOKS IS STILL GOING AHEAD!

NEWS

This now means that we are concentrating on the next two book releases, which are Tim Lebbon‘s Still Life novella and Paul Kane‘s Ghosts collection of supernatural fiction. Both the volumes will be officially launched at this year’s World Fantasy Convention in Brighton, to be held between October 31st and November 3rd at the Hilton Brighton Metropole. Next week we will be unveiling the blurbs for each of the books, to whet your collective appetites. Plus, we hope in the not too distant future to be able to reveal the cover artwork for Tim’s volume, which will be brought to you by the legendary artist Jim Burns – really looking forward to that.

Paul’s collection will be graced by a superb Edward Miller cover, and will also feature an introduction by bestselling horror author Nancy Kilpatrick, plus, as a bonus in the hardback edition only, the film-script to Paul’s Wind Chimes (which was shown on TV), directed and introduced by Brad Watson. As an extra bonus, a DVD of the film will be included as well.

If you can’t attend World Fantasy, then fear not – you can make sure of YOUR copy today by preordering via the Paypal buttons below (all prices INCLUDE P+P). You can also order via cheque or bank transfer – for details contact us at spectralpress[AT]gmail[DOT]com. (Please be aware that, if paying by US cheque, it will take six – eight weeks to clear. ) Also, please take advantage of the special combined offer: buy both books and save money!

At the end of October/beginning of November, Spectral will be launching two books by top-class writers, Still Life by Tim Lebbon and Ghosts by Paul Kane (cover artwork by Edward Miller shown above). They will be officially launched at World Fantasy Con in Brighton, but you can preorder copies of the LIMITED (125 each) SIGNED HARDBACKS of one or both now (at a special price) so you can be sure you’ll get one. Please see Paypal buttons below for details of prices. (If paying by any other means, please contact spectralpress[AT]gmail[DOT]com for details)

The prolific Tim Lebbon is a New York Times bestselling author, whose output ranges right the way from short stories to novellas to novels, and covers the spectrum from original material through to franchises like Star Wars and onward to novelisations of films like Cabin in the Woods. His Spectral novella is an original story, and will feature cover artwork by the legendary Jim Burns, whose artistic visions have graced many a mainstream book jacket over the last few decades – watch out for the reveal as soon as the artwork is finished!

Paul Kane is also a prolific writer, and has achieved mass-market success Arrowhead trilogy, as well as critical acclaim for his books, The Hellraiser Films and their Legacy (non-fiction) and the Hellbound Hearts anthology, stories directly inspired by the Hellraiser mythos created by Clive Barker (edited in collaboration with his wife Marie O’Regan). Ghosts is a collection of all his supernatural fiction penned over the last fifteen years or so, plus a couple original to the collection. It will also feature an introduction by Canadian author/editor Nancy Kilpatrick plus, as a bonus with the hardback edition, the film script of Wind Chimes written by Paul and directed by Brad Watson (and introduced by the latter). As an extra, the book will also come with a DVD of the film so you can watch it as well!

So, to brighten up this dreary Monday morning, let’s give you some news about some forthcoming publications…

The cover picture above is from Paul Kane’s Ghosts supernatural fiction collection due to be launched at World Fantasy Con in Brighton in November. It’s by Edward Miller, and we think it’s a wonderfully evocative piece which conveys the atmosphere of the book admirably. The hardback edition will also feature Paul Kane’s script to the  Wind Chimes film, which has been featured on TV and in Fangoria magazine, and there’ll be a little introduction by the film’s director Brad Watson. Even better than just reading the script, you will be able to watch the film as there will be a DVD of Wind Chimes as a bonus extra.

Launching at the same event will be Tim Lebbon’s Still Life novella, and that one will be wrapped up in a cover by renowned artist Jim Burns, whose work has graced many bestsellers over the years. As soon as we have the cover concept we’ll be sure to show you right here!

Spectral is planning to put HALF of each hardback print run on pre-order next month, while the rest will be for the WFC launch – this is to give EVERYONE a chance to get hold of copies. If you want to maker sure of your copy now please email spectralpress[AT]gmail[DOT]com to reserve your copy. They are expected to retail around £20 each (plus p+p), but a special price will offered if you pre-order both (and you’ll save on postage that way, too).

Roll on World Fantasy Con 2013!

Major news – 18:06:2013

British Fantasy Awards nomineeWe’ve been dying to tell you this news for about six weeks or more now, but at last we can reveal that Spectral Press has, for the second year running, been nominated for a British Fantasy Award, for Best Small Press (PS Publishing Independent Press). This is an absolute validation for all the hard work we’ve been pouring into Spectral over the last 30 months, and it certainly puts the imprint into the top flight of genre publishers (at least we like to think so… ). There’s some stiff opposition in the category, but that’s all for the best in our belief.

Additionally, Spectral publications received two other nominations, both in the Best Novella Category – namely, The Respectable Face of Tyranny by Gary Fry and The Nine Deaths of Dr. Valentine by John L. Probert. We think it’s absolutely brilliant that the first two Spectral Visions novellas each receive a nomination.  We’ve included the links to the Kindle books on Amazon below:

Finally, congratulations to ALL the nominees in this year’s awards, which will be presented at World Fantasy Con in Brighton, UK in November. You can find the complete list on the British Fantasy Society website here.
